Shiso, or Perilla Frutescens, an aromatic plant with a thousand virtues, still little known in France.
Perilla, an aromatic, medicinal and ornamental leafy vegetable, is an unclassifiable plant. It has a purple or green complexion, with curly, serrated leaves and delicate flavors.
Also known as “Shiso” or “wild sesame”, it is native to Southeast Asia and grows wild. Shiso is considered sacred, particularly in Japan and Taiwan. Ceremonies are held to harvest it, and it is planted in gardens to attract protection and ward off evil influences.
This variety is the Nanking (ancient Chinese capital) Perilla or Shiso.
Shiso Pourpre contains anthocyanins that give it depth of color and develop unique, slightly smoky, woody aromas that intrigue the taste buds.
Its highly original taste is characteristic of umami flavor, dry and round but without astringency, full and long in the mouth.
